Hey Grapeviners!

We’re on an orange weather warning today with expected winds of up to 120 km/h, so you’d probably best just stay in and… check out our brand new website!

🍇 granadagrapevine.com - now boasts a proper calendar of events and a growing list of regular weekly happenings and exhibitions (with more stuff being added all the time). Have a look and tell us what you think!

Looking ahead to the weekend, it’s the Romería de San Cecilio on Sunday - a traditional pilgrimage to Sacromonte with flamenco, festivities and feasting (see vid) - plus the Fiestas de San Blas starting on Saturday in places like Víznar, Dúdar and Dúrcal. There’s also plenty of live music and theatre to chase away those winter blues.

A quick heads-up for tomorrow: there’s a Tractadora 🚜, with f*d off farmers rolling into the city by tractor from 10am, so expect traffic to move at a more… rural pace. There are also several marches planned this weekend (details below).

Can you name the Granadino? 👇 Answer at the bottom of the email.

🎵 Musical Highlights:

This week is relatively chill. Dave’s Fave’s™ include Pumuky + I am Dive, who break from the norm with a night of downbeat music. I am Dive list Boards of Canada and Sigur Rós as influences, paying homage to an era when atmospheric calm was still considered desirable. Flamenco fans will enjoy the extremely talented Ricardo Rubí (Watch) and locally-based favourite Yazan Ibrahim (Watch). Two brief festivals will interest lovers of music from different areas of the world. The university is putting on two Irish music concerts as part of an intensive on Irish studies, Thursday and Friday. The Primer Encuentro de Son Jarocho "Barroco Vivo" is a “dialogue” between baroque European culture and the living tradition of Veracruz.

P.S. If you happen to bump into the mayor, Marifrán, tell her that her Agenda Cultural Digital (the pending task we have as a city) has already been built by two guiris. 😉

Miguel Ríos (born 1944) is a rock musician from Granada who became one of Spain's first international rock stars. His 1970 symphonic rock hit "Himno de la Alegría" (based on Beethoven's Ode to Joy) sold millions worldwide and made him a household name across Europe and Latin America. Born in the Albaicín neighbourhood, Ríos started performing in Granada's clubs and cafés in the 1960s before launching a career that spanned decades, helping establish rock music in Spain during the Franco era and beyond. He will be playing in Granada on 7 Feb at Palacio de Congresos.
