Feliz Año, Grapeviners!
Did you miss us? One week into 2026 and whether you’ve stolen a president from his country, or just the last piece of turrón from the cupboard, it’s clear we’re off to a memorable start.
Like stepping into the winter sun on a cold Granada morning, the Grapevine is here to warm you up and tempt you out of the house... This week, there’s plenty of live music and theatre. There are covers of two British legends - Pink Floyd and Dire Straits - plus a night-long homage to another, David Bowie, featuring several local bands… On the stage, we’ve got a musical version of Lorca’s classic Bernarda Alba, a comedy where Disney princesses spill all, and the circus is still in town until 18 Jan.
Film lovers are in luck; La Madraza is hosting free screenings of some of David Lynch’s most iconic works starting on Tuesday!

🎵 Musical Highlights:
Anyone wanting to dedicate their weekend to checking out local talent should head to Planta Baja, where a number of the city’s freshest acts will pay their respects to David Bowie on Friday, or Enano Rojo (a much-loved bar that used to exist on C Elvira), on Saturday. Several acts we’ve previously singled out for mention will be there, including Blanca Adelfa, Dark Libra, Sosoritnem and Doctor Pretorius. Also check out Jaguardiente, a pleasingly tight band performing smooth sounds, with nice vocals and a Fender Rhodes. Johnny B. Zero offer more than just a great name, with catchy tunes, interesting song structures and cheeky lyrics. The Alberto Barban Quintet look very promising with several Granada-based musicians. The big name performer of the week is Paco Ibañez. In the ballet world, the Kiev Ballet will be defiantly performing Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky, with proceeds going to Unicef’s efforts helping the Ukrainian people.

That’s it for another week! We’ll see you all in the upside down. Otherwise, next Wednesday in your inbox. And please, if you haven’t already, fill out our survey and let us know how we’re doing!

Ángel Ganivet (1865–1898) was a Granada-born writer, essayist, novelist, and diplomat considered a precursor to Spain's Generation of '98. His most important work, Idearium español (1897), examined the Spanish temperament and argued that Spain suffered from "abulia" - a paralysis of the will - having wasted its energies on territorial expansion rather than spiritual development. He also wrote Granada la bella (1896), novels satirizing Spanish society, and Cartas finlandesas on Nordic versus Spanish character. Serving in the Spanish consular service across Europe, he died by suicide in Riga on 29 November 1898 at age 32, disillusioned in love and facing progressive illness.
