Hello Grapeviners,

Our four-year old helped with this week’s header image, featuring the sun ☀️ - which has finally reappeared in Granada! Here’s to afternoons on terraces with a caña… 🍻

Today is Miércoles de Ceniza (Ash Wednesday) and whether you’ve buried a sardine, sworn off chocolate, or have absolutely no idea what we’re talking about, we’re here to make your inbox a little brighter.

Across the province, plenty of pueblos will celebrate Carnaval this weekend - and, finally, without rain threatening the parade. It’s also Made in Granada Market, complete with a plant exchange on Sunday.

Before we begin, we have an important announcement… 👇

Do you run a local business, or know one that wants to reach 700+ English speakers in Granada?

Can you name the Granada character? 👇 Answer at the bottom of the email.

🎵 Musical Highlights:

This week offers a good variety of interesting music. Dave’s Faves™ are:
Lula Mora. A big hit at Casa Grapevine, this duo shift effortlessly between playful lightness and power.
Speaking of power… orchestral music doesn’t get much punchier than German late-romanticism. Whilst not as grandiose as some of his other work, the city orchestra will no doubt have a blast performing two consecutive evenings of Mahler’s 4th Symphony.
Carlos de Jacoba is a very talented Flamenco guitarist from Motril who regularly performs with the biggest names in Flamenco.
Colectivo Da Silva are one of Granada’s bigger names hope to please a home-crowd.
Èlia Bastida brings a welcome bit of violin-led jazz, something you don’t hear all that much of these days. Multi-instrumental loop station acts are also fewer and further between than they were 20 years ago.
Granada-based Fauno Loop reminds us why we shouldn’t leave that art form in the past.
Joseba Irazoki + Pelomono should provide a fun night, the former could be seen as a Basque Captain Beefheart, while the latter are a Granada surf-rock outfit that play dustbins and empty paint pots in fancy dress.
Finally, the feel good duo Lamaar & Leo Esquivel make another of their regular appearances. Very suitable music to welcome back the sunshine. ☀️

Chorrojumo was the nickname of Mariano Fernández Santiago (1838–1906), born in Ítrabo in Granada province. He became one of the most iconic figures of 19th-century Granada by stationing himself at the gates of the Alhambra and declaring himself the King of the Gypsies. Wearing a distinctive catite hat (a tall conical Andalusian hat) and traditional Romani clothing, he charged tourists and visitors for guided tours, photo sessions and stories about his supposed royal lineage. There's now a four-metre bronze statue of him by blacksmith Antonio Salazar at the entrance to Sacromonte, inaugurated in 1995. There's also a recent docu-fiction film, Quién vio los templos caer, imagining him wandering Granada's streets two centuries on.
