Hello Grapeviners!

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the kids are home all morning 😱.

As I’m desperately trying to finish this sentence to the soundtrack of StoryBots, Storm Leonardo shows no intention of stopping... Rivers are swelling across the province, multiple roads are closed, education centres are shut (possibly again tomorrow 🙈). The forecast - as far as the eye can see - one long, unbroken rain cloud 🌧️🌧️🌧️.

Despite the weather, there’s plenty going on in the city this week, with a spotlight on local musical talent. Miguel Ríos, Granada’s biggest rock star, is playing his second farewell tour, alongside lots of other great local bands at venues across the city. There are loads of free films showing at La Madraza and Filmoteca Andalucía… And, if your social life needs shaking up a little, check out the growing list of regular events on our website - from intercambios to pub quizzes - guaranteed to brighten up your February! ☀️

Can you name the Granadino? 👇 Answer at the bottom of the email.

🎵 Musical Highlights:

This week is positively packed with homegrown musical heavyweights. 💪 Planta Baja’s Homage to Robe Iniesta unites a long list of Granada’s musical royalty (Colectivo da Silva, Maria del Mal and several members of Eskorzo to name but a few!). They come together to show their respects to Extremoduro’s recently-deceased frontman across two nights of free concerts. Miguel Ríos must be the city’s most famous rock star. He’s certainly famous at Casa Grapevine, where both daughters regularly jump around to Bienvenidos! Señor Rios is a huge supporter of upcoming talent. Presumably, he’d approve of Cante Artesonado’s showcase of young voices at Lemon Rock as well as the II Concurso Internacional Composición Coral, a showcase of contemporary choral composers. Sunday lunchtimes at Auditorio Manuel de Falla often feature unusual ensembles and lesser-known works. This Sunday’s Guernica - Cuarteto Ars Nova y Elisa Urrestarazu stays true to that, with a very modern programme performed by a string quartet and saxophone.

Francisco Alonso (1887–1948) was a Granada-born composer who became one of Spain's most prolific zarzuela writers. His light operettas, including "La calesera", "La parranda" and "Me llaman la presumida", filled theatres across Spain and Latin America during the early 20th century. Born in the Albaicín, he trained at the Madrid Conservatory before dedicating his career to popular musical theatre, composing over 200 works that blended folk melodies with catchy rhythms.
