Hello Grapeviners,
We always like to highlight the diversity of activities on offer in the city. This week is no exception! Love classic cars? Chickpeas? Micro-theatre? Watching people punch each other as hard as they can? There’s something for everyone!
In the news - across the city, curry-lovers breathe a collective sigh of relief as India Bazar reopens. 😮💨
Sunday marks International Women’s Day, with a demo leaving from Triunfo Gardens at midday. Across the city you’ll also find workshops, free self-defence classes for women, and even a feminist flamenco tablao! We’ve rounded up our top picks over on Instagram.
Speaking of powerful female forces… Storm Regina is rolling in today with yellow weather warnings for rain and thunderstorms, plus a sweep of Saharan dust set to tint the skies that unmistakable shade of orange.

🎵 Musical Highlights:
Lot’s of good options this week. Dave’s Faves™:
IZETA + Shishi - Local favourites Izeta are supported by fun Lithuanian girl-punks, Shishi.
Repion - Powerful girl band formed by two sisters during their school years perform two consecutive nights. At time of writing, only the first night had sold out.
INNEC - More avant-garde than the city’s standard jazz offering.
Kiko Veneno - Much-loved veteran that performed on La Leyenda del Tiempo, among many claims to fame.
MuchoPelo - Upbeat sounds from a man with a truly impressive quantity of hair.
Aweful Kanawful - Once you’ve given yourself a name this good, can you really put a foot wrong?
Frustration - French punks with a fiercely loyal underground following.
Fred Wesley - While it’d be quicker to list the musicians Fred Wesley HASN’T collaborated with, I’ll name a few he has… James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic and Maceo Parker. I know several of you will be jumping at this one!

Thanks for reading - have a great week! Don’t forget to share this newsletter with your favourite woman (or man) this week…

Antonina Rodrigo (born 1935) is a feminist writer and biographer from Albaicín who has spent her career recovering the stories of women erased from Spanish history. Her biographical subjects include Mariana Pineda, Margarita Xirgu, Federica Montseny and Maria Lejarraga. Her books Mujeres de Espana: Las Silenciadas (Women of Spain: The Silenced) and Mujeres Olvidadas (Forgotten Women) documented the lives of women who were killed, exiled or erased from the record during and after the Spanish Civil War. She celebrated her 90th birthday in Feb 2025. There is a plaque on Callejon del Gallo, the street were she was born in the lower Albaicín and the nearby square is named Placeta Antonina Rodrigo.
The eight women featured in the header image were written about by Antonina:
Mariana Pineda (1804–1831) - Granada; liberal heroine executed for embroidering a revolutionary flag.
Maria Lejarraga (1874–1974) - La Rioja; playwright whose works were published under her husband's name.
Margarita Xirgu (1888–1969) - Catalonia; stage actress and Lorca collaborator who went into exile after the Civil War.
Amparo Poch y Gascon (1902–1968) - Zaragoza; anarchist doctor, pacifist and co-founder of Mujeres Libres.
Federica Montseny (1905–1994) - Madrid; Spain's first female government minister, serving during the Republic.
Ana Maria Dali (1908–1989) - Figueres, Catalonia; writer and sister of Salvador Dali.
Mercedes Nunez Targa (1911–1986) - Barcelona; communist resistance fighter who survived Ravensbruck concentration camp.
Rosario Sanchez Mora "La Dinamitera" (1919–2008) - Madrid; Civil War miliciana nicknamed for her expertise with explosives.
